$25,000 Career Kickstart

In celebration of the anonymous hours spent by countless creatives who spend days and sleepless nights refining their craft, The Grinders Grant is a new initiative supporting emerging Melbourne talent.

In 2019, BEST conceptualised a new strategic brand undertaking and developed The Grinders Grant as the basis of the From The Streets of Melbourne brand campaign.

Multiple grants of $25,000 were made available to emerging Melbourne talent in the fields of design, fashion and music from Melbourne's rich talent pool, whose anonymous hours of work before achieving recognition are so often fuelled by caffeine.

This year, talented Melbourne singer-songwriter JANEVA, alongside illustrator Antra Svarcs and jewellery designer Megan Moss were the first year recipients and formed the basis of the brand campaign, built primarily on branded content, social media and print were bought to life.

With the announcement of 2020 grant, hundreds of extremely talented creatives submitted entries, bearing testament to the strength in the idea of awarding $25,000 to kick start someone's career.

The calibre of talent has been exceptional, and we found it no easy task in narrowing down the shortlist of candidates and selecting the 2020 recipient. Jarryd was selected on the basis of not only his creativity, but his versatility and the direct correlation of his idea and our campaign. While we were not looking for a direct campaign link, this is a lovely bonus to have as part of our campaign strategy.

Melbourne sure is one creative city. Congratulations Jarryd; we look forward to working beside you as part of the 2020 ‘From the Streets of Melbourne’ campaign.” - Janelle Toomey, Business Director at BEST.

The winner, Jarryd Hood, was announced this week on World Coffee Day. Jarryd’s submission took the gong for his vibrant side hustle, Do Something?, a Melbourne centric website promoting culture through design, online guides, apparel and dance parties. Jarryd is planning to create an app with the grant funds.
